IOWA LIONS DISTRICT 9SE

District Governor Nancy Slack

District Governor Nancy Slack
Hello Lions, Leos, and Lioness
Lions started for Mark and I early in 1999. Our air conditioning repair man invited us to come to a Lions meeting in Melcher-Dallas. We quickly learned of the good things they were doing and we decided to become Lions. With the connection in our local Lions club we were able to make lots of friends. We attended our 1st Iowa Lions State convention that June.
Mark and I had a great habit of talking all about the exciting things Lions were involved in on our drives home from such events. The seminars, the new friends gave us such a great feeling of enthusiasm for Lions. Over and over we talked about what we could share with our Lions back home. It wasn’t long before Mark was asked to be a zone chair; I was right by his side. With the help of a special gal in Melcher-Dallas Lions we put on a special themed zone meeting in our community center back home. The fun we had just blossomed from there.
Mark talked to Gary Fry at one of our early state conventions about Great Plains. We both attended the 2nd Great Plains Leadership Institute. Dave Stoufer was one of the speakers and Rachel Nicola was a member of the group I was in. One special thing Mark commented on one morning was the elderly blind man who was in the dark shower room shaving when he entered the room. More than that for me was the love and selflessness this man was giving of himself through Lions. This gentleman had a special friend at his side. It was a big black Labrador from Leader Dogs for the Blind. Great Plains instilled such wonderful enthusiasm in both of us. I came away from it realizing that I would probably some day want to be a District Governor.
Mark and I shared 12 fun years together serving Lions of Iowa. In our 12 years in our local club we were involved with helping community center evolve, starting up of a flag service for our town, being involved with the programs for the kids, monthly music jams, the peace poster contests, being on the board of the Dollars for Scholars in Melcher-Dallas. Mark and I both served as President of our Melcher-Dallas Lions Club. Beyond our local Lions, I served as a Leader Dog chair, Region and zone chair, and I’ve had the pleasure of being a counselor and member of the medical staff of Camp Hertko Hollow. Just this past winter we hosted a young teen through the Lions Youth Exchange from Peru in our home.
Mark and I were married for 38 years last November. We were blessed with 3 wonderful children. They are all married now. Our oldest daughter Angela and her husband Brian have 2 terrific kids, Emily and Ben. Daughter Jennifer and Paul live in Des Moines. Jen is a band director at a middle school. Our son Russ and his wife Lori and their little son Keaton also live in Des Moines. Keaton will celebrate his 1st birthday on July 13th. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother. My sister Sue just recently joined the Melcher-Dallas Lions Club.
Mark served Lions with a big open heart. So many Lions were there at the time of our family’s loss. I miss him immensely. He won’t be physically with me as I serve as your District Governor this year, but he will be in my heart and thoughts.
Let’s all do as much as we are physically able to do to help others in need this year through our LIONS.
